PENTATHLON TEAM ATHLETICS COMPETITION

19th October – 11th December

We are very excited to include this version of Sportshall Athletics to our virtual competition calendar this term. The competition is for KS2 and KS3.

Sportshall have produced some very helpful resources and videos for this activity to make it easy to run, so this may be something that you would like to run as an intraschool competition. If you would like to enter the partnership competition all you need to do is to email your completed spreadsheet to Helen or Charlie before the 11th December.

Who for: Seperate competitions for Y3/4 and Y5/6 in KS2. Seperate competitions for Y7/8 boys and Y7/8 girls in KS3.

Outline of competition; The competition consists of 5 events which can be done during PE lessons or in a club over the term:

  • Speed Bounce
  • Chest Push
  • Shuttle Run
  • Standing Long Jump
  • Vertical Jump

If you have Sportshall Athletics equipment you can use this but alternatively you can adapt what equipment you have to suit each event e.g. Speed Bounce – you could use a skipping rope to jump over. If however you would like to purchase the Sportshall Athletics equipment we have included the details for this below.

Each school completes the results sheets for each age group and then for the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 competitions the spreadsheet works out who the top 5 ranked boys and top 5 ranked girls are to give you a team score. For the Year 7/8 girls and boys competitions the spreadsheet takes the top 10 girls or top 10 boys. You then send the whole results spreadsheet(s) back us at and we will enter the scores on to the master spreadsheet to work out the school positions and leaderboard.

You could also run this as an intra school competition, for example in houses or year groups or as a Personal Best challenge as the results sheet works out each child’s individual score and then also converts this into a Sportshall Athletics Pentathlon award.

Awards

The main purpose of this event is fun, friendly competition and there will be certificates available for everyone that takes part. There will also be some team prizes and individual awards for each of the 4 competitions so get practicing and give it your personal best.

Please see below the guidance notes detailing each event, score tables for both age groups, a vertical jump scale should you need one and details on purchasing your own equipment.

*******IMPORTANT INFORMATION***********

Following enquiries from a few primary schools we have decided to identify alternative equipment which can be used for the Speed Bounce and Chest Push activities. This is in line with schools across the county.

SPEED BOUNCE – Please use three small dome cones/markers which are in a line and taped down onto the floor, or preferably a gym mat, which could then be used inside or outside.

CHEST PUSH – Please use a size 4 football to complete the throw.
